Finding the Evidence for Keeping the Patency in Peripheral Intermittent Intravenous Devices

چکیده
Background:There is a controversial aspect concerning the method of choice for maintaining the patency of peripheral intermittent intravenous catheters. Some institutes use a dilution of heparin for this purpose, whereas many others use a small amount of normal saline flush. So, it would be worthwhile to look for the best available evidence for this. Methods: A thorough search was performed in different nursing and medical databases, in order to find the available evidence. All relevant information has been obtained from papers written in English and published during the last twenty years. Results: Many research papers were examined and appraised for their level of evidence. The available evidence suggests the same degree of effectiveness of normal saline versus heparin solution for maintenance of patency of peripheral intermittent intravenous catheters. Conclusion: Since the use of heparin is considered the cause for many side effects and complications, normal saline should be the solution of choice as it contributes to patients’ safety, patients’ satisfaction and cost savings.

The effects of pulsatile flushing on phlebitis and peripheral intravenous catheters patency
Background and Aim: Thrombophlebitis is considered as a major cause of peripheral intravenous catheters (PICs) failure. The flushing technique in the laboratory has been effective in clearing the catheter duct, but its effectiveness in the clinical setting is unknown, therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of pulsatile flushing on phlebitis, type, and duration of PICs pate...
متن کاملVariability in the clinical practice of maintaining the patency of peripheral intravenous catheters.
OBJECTIVE To establish variations in clinical practice associated with maintaining the patency of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIC) and to determine to what extent such clinical practice falls within the limits of the available scientific evidence, based on a random sample Spanish public hospitals. METHODS A cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in non-psychiatric public hos...
متن کاملEffect of Continuous Flushing on Patency Time of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters
Background and purpose: Occlusion is a decreasing factor on longevity of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs). Continuous flushing (injection of specific volume of solution such as Normal Saline (N/S) before and after each drug infusion into PIVCs at determined interval time) is one of the effective methods in in vitro studies to maintain the PIVCs patency. The aim of this study was to inve...
متن کاملEfficacy of normal saline versus heparinized saline solution for locking catheters of totally implantable long-term central vascular access devices in adult cancer patients.
BACKGROUND Heparin solution is routinely used to maintain the patency of infusion devices. Literature supports the alternative use of normal saline solution for flushing and locking intravenous infusion devices especially for pediatric patients. There is uncertainty regarding safety and efficacy of this policy for intermittent locking of implanted ports. OBJECTIVE This study evaluates efficac...
متن کاملASHP therapeutic position statement on the institutional use of 0.9% sodium chloride injection to maintain patency of peripheral indwelling intermittent infusion devices.
0.9% Sodium chloride injection is a safe and effective indwelling solution for maintaining catheter patency of peripheral indwelling intermittent infusion devices (PIIIDs) in adults and children age one year or older. ASHP supports the use of 0.9% sodium chloride injection in preference to heparin-containing flush solutions (heparin flush) in the institutional setting, on the basis of clinical ...
